On Saturday, December 7th from 1-4 PM at Sunrise Yoga studio, Valerie Kiser and I (Michele Collins) will be offering a workshop, Ayurveda and Menopause. Ayurveda, which translates from Sanskrit as Science of Life, is a 5000 year old wholistic health system that is rooted in achieving wellness and health through an individualized approach based on constitution of Dosha type. Learning about how to apply Ayurveda to your own life is essentially learning a language, the language of nature, that you can interpret in your own body and use to restore health and balance.
In Saturday’s workshop, Michele will teach how to use food, herbs, and lifestyle to find balance in menopause, while Valerie will teach how to use yoga and meditation for the same goal. Yoga, the sister science to Ayurveda, is an important piece because it focuses on strengthening your inner observer and your own self awareness of your body and how you are doing in the present moment. It provides a solid foundation for understanding how to apply Ayurveda to yourself and your dosha type.
Dosha can be translated as fault in Sanskrit. Literally the doshas are used to describe what happens when the natural elements are out of balance in our bodies. The there doshas – Pitta, Vata, and Kapha – are each combinations of the five elements that comprise nature, as well as humans, who are based on the same template of the natural world. Pitta, is fire and water; Vata is air and ether; and Kapha is earth and water. These elemental combinations give enormous clues as to what each constitution looks like out of balance. Keep in mind that each constitution also has a positive and beautiful expression in balance which is equally important. Pitta is courageous, passionate, independent, and driven. Vata is inspiring, creative, flexible, and sharply intelligent. Kapha is kind, generous, stable, grounded, and kind.
On Saturday, we will talk about what exactly menopause is according to Ayurveda and review the basic building blocks for interpreting the language of the natural world that Ayurveda teaches. We will also discuss how to use food, herbs, and yoga to bring balance to specific issues you may encounter during menopause. For more information about how to sign up, click here.
